Cunard's Magnificent Queen Mary 2 Arrives in

14 Mar 2010
The largest ship ever to visit Australia, Cunard’s magnificent Queen Mary 2, arrived in Fremantle this morning, on her maiden visit to Western Australia.

More than double the size of her famous sister, the QE2, the majestic Queen Mary 2 berthed at Fremantle early this morning and will depart at 5pm.

The 62-metre-high Queen Mary 2 is carrying around 2500 guests and 1300 crew, with her visit expected to inject more than $500,000 into the Western Australian economy.

Her call comes midway through her third world voyage – a 101-day journey which will continue to Mauritius before returning to New York via Africa and the Americas.

Today’s visit is the first of four calls that Queen Mary 2 will make to Fremantle over the next two years. The ocean liner will call at Fremantle next February on her fourth world voyage.

Then, in 2012, she will visit Fremantle twice during her history-making 28-day deployment in Australian waters for her Royal Circumnavigation of the country, announced this week.

Designed to reflect the best of Cunard’s heritage and traditions, the magnificent liner’s signature features include sweeping staircases, a grand ballroom and 360° promenade deck.

One of the most spacious ships at sea, she boasts 10 restaurants, five pools, the largest ballroom at sea, the largest library at sea and the world’s first floating planetarium.

Queen Mary 2’s passengers consume more than 16,000 meals each day including 73kg of lobster and 3.3kg of Russian caviar along with 344 bottles of champagne and 6000 cups of tea. Annual tea consumption aboard Queen Mary 2 would fill an Olympic-size swimming pool.

The ship’s two huge 2.1m-long whistles – one an original horn from the first Queen Mary – can be heard 16km away.

Queen Mary 2 will return to Fremantle in 2011 on her fourth world voyage along with her younger sister, Queen Elizabeth, which be will visiting Australia on her first world cruise following her launch in October this year.

Australians keen to join Queen Mary 2 on her 2011 world voyage can enjoy 12 nights from Cape Town to Fremantle from $2529* per person twin share.
